About the Presentation

This program helps psychologists and allied mental health professionals understand the undeniable power of social media in practice and in our everyday lives. There is virtually no part of our existence free of the influence of social media, yet psychologists have not become full and vital participants in its use. There are many reasons mental health professionals shun this mode of communication—including valid concerns about privacy and confidentiality—but many of their assumptions about social Media- care based on misunderstandings, myths, and misconceptions.

Drs. Rego and Owens show how social media has changed and improved their practices. They talk about how attendees can start making contacts on social media and with more traditional media. In addition, they introduce some of the platforms and outlets friendly to mental health professionals and demonstrate how to get started using them.
The presentation considers the ethical duties of psychologists and the kinds of limitations those place on their media participation. In addition, Drs. Rego and Owens cover how those constraints can be handled effectively so that mental health professionals can influence and empower the public with evidence-based, expert information.
