Implementing the NY Mental Health Mandate: Curriculum Requirements, Partnerships & Strategies
Dear NCPA Members,
As you already know, the NY State mandated mental health curriculum for all grades is already in effect.
We expect this series of workshops to help school districts implement it will fill up very quickly and seating is limited.
Our own NCPA Trustee Ron Smith has been instrumental in putting it together; he and NCPA Secretary Dottie Ahl will be presenting.

Presentation Outline:
- A concise overview of the NY Mental Health Report’s Requirements and Recommendations
- The required curriculum framework which includes signs & symptoms of mental health conditions and reduction of the stigma of mental illness
- Comparison of the Mental Health Framework’s curriculum skill competencies with evidence-based SEL and mindfulness curricula – what to look for in skill-based lessons
- The role of school climate: How the governing values of ALL staff, parents, and students, and the words and actions we all choose influence school climate and the MH curriculum’s effectiveness

What Your School Can Do:
- Review and assess current elementary and secondary level health education curricula for alignment to new mental health education requirements;
- Recommended to build capacity and strengthen relationships between educators and pupil personnel services (school psychologist, social worker, school counselor, nurse);
- Recommended to develop school and community partnerships;
- Recommended to identify strategies to engage families and students in supporting mental health and well-being;
- Recommended to support a positive school climate; and
- Recommended to leverage mental health partnerships.
