Essentials of Disaster Mental Health for Psychologists (4 NYS CE Credits)

Topic: Review of evidence-based knowledge on disaster characteristics, phases of disaster response, human responses, and intervention priorities across populations and response phases.

Course Description:  In depth training on characteristics of disasters and how they affect psychological responses, the variety of reactions with consideration of high-risk groups, developmental factors, distinguishing typical responses from indications of more severe psychopathology.  Elaboration of roles for psychologists in various phases of disaster response and recovery.

Method of Instruction: Power Point guided lecture/discussion with examples and tabletop exercises.

Course Objectives:

  1. To identify various types of disasters.  
  2. To accurately describe phases of disaster response. 
  3. To identify emotional, cognitive, physical, behavioral, and spiritual reactions to trauma. 
  4. To identify risk factors for more severe reactions to trauma. 
  5. To identify a variety of roles psychologists can play in disaster response, recovery, and mitigation and how such roles shift during different phases.

About the Presenter:

Gloria Rothenberg, PhD is a Clinical Psychologist with over 35 years of experience who has worked in private practice, schools, clinics, and hospital settings. She is a Certified Trainer in the New York State Office of Mental Health Disaster Mental Health program, a Certified Trainer in Psychological First Aid, and a Trainer for the Project Liberty-NYSPA School Outreach Program. She has been a volunteer for the Medical Reserve Corps of the Nassau County Health Department for 16 years and serves on its Command Staff. Dr. Rothenberg has assisted in public disaster responses to Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the H1N1 Flu outbreak, and the current Covid19 Vaccination Points of Distribution efforts in Nassau County. She is a Past President of NCPA, a former Director of CE for NPSI, a former member of the New York State Board for Psychology, and currently serves on the Extended Board for Licensure and Discipline in Psychology of the New York State Department of Education.
