God at an Analytic Impasse: Poverty, Devotion, and the Elusive Self

Guest Speaker:  Sue Grand, Ph.D.

Discussants: Lewis Aron, Ph.D., ABPP, Jeffry Wells, M.Div

Saturday, March 10, 2012

When: 9:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m., Registration begins at 8:30am

Where: Rexcorp, 68 South Service Road, Melville, New York, 11747

Dr. Grand's fascinating paper presents her work with a migrant worker who struggles out of poverty to become a physician and caretaker. Unknown to himself as a human subject, his life is a devotion to the needy other. His own health is compromised and his sacrificial practices draw him close to near-death. Analysis of his masochism fails. To save his life, the dyad must examine his Christian convictions of passion, devotion, and sacrifice. These values collide with the analyst's philosophical/metaphysical system, derived from relational analytic theory, her own reform Jewish ethos, and atheistic beliefs. Can patient and analyst meet — and save his life?

The Conference will be held at Rexcorp, 68 South Service Road, Melville, New York, 11747, just off of the Long Island Expressway and with easy access from all directions. In the morning, we will hear Dr. Grand’s presentation followed by a dialogue with the two discussants. In keeping with SIPP tradition, over lunch there will be opportunity for further consideration of these ideas by all conference attendees. Please join us as we explore this compelling intersection of psychoanalysis, religion, and social justice in the consulting room.

Couple Therapy: A Developmental Approach - Seminar

Adelphi University Postgraduate Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
The Postgraduate Psychotherapy Center is offering the following seminar in couple treatment:

Instructor: Michael D. Zentman, Ph.D.

Sundays, May 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, 2012

When: Sundays 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Where: Adelphi University Postgraduate Psychotherapy Center, 158 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, N.Y. 11530

Overview of Seminar
Treating couples is not easy. If partners are not well integrated and if their relationship is in a fragile state, things can get difficult very quickly. Having a theoretical framework to understand the nature of a couple’s disharmony and possessing a set of clinical skills to respond to fast-moving relationship dynamics can make the difference between effective treatment and clinical chaos.

This twelve-hour seminar will focus on a model of couples therapy that integrates psychoanalytic and family systems theories and techniques. It relies on a developmental schema that maps the dynamics, structure, and emotional atmosphere of a relationship in order to generate a plan of treatment. This is a multi-level approach that addresses processes on interactional, structural, intra-psychic, and intergenerational levels. Participants will discuss their cases and video recordings of treatment sessions will demonstrate clinical theory and techniques.

Dr. Zentman has been teaching and supervising couples therapy for 25 years. He has post-doctoral certification in psychoanalysis, group therapy and family and marital therapy and had advanced training with Salvador Minuchin, Betty Carter and various faculty at the Ackerman Institute.

Registration Information:
The fee for this seminar is $400. For Candidates currently enrolled in the Adelphi Postgraduate Programs the fee is $300.
