Alcohol and drug use disorders are among the most common clinical disorders that present clinicians with significant challenges. Moreover, many patients with psychiatric illness have coexisting substance use disorders (SUD), making the treatment of these dually diagnosed patients particularly difficult. The objective of this presentation is for participants to apply new therapeutic approaches based on recent research findings to patients with substance use disorders, including those with co-occurring psychiatric illness. Specific discussion will highlight the indications for Integrated Group Therapy, an evidence-based treatment approach, for patients with bipolar disorder and SUD.

In light of the current opioid epidemic, new research findings regarding the treatment of patients with opioid use disorders will also be discussed. Clinical techniques to help engage patients who are not motivated for abstinence will also be emphasized.

  4. Understand Integrated Group Therapy in the treatment of bipolarity and SUD
  5. Understand the uses of medication for alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder
