Establishing a Positive School Climate Incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mindfulness Programs That Support Skill Development for Students and Staff

Recommended Participants: School Psychologists; Social Workers; Guidance Counselors, Teachers as well as District and Building-Level School Leaders and Graduate Students.

Jacqueline Esp., MSW, earned her MSW from Adelphi University and has held positions as school social worker, assistant principal, and currently is Director of Pupil Personnel Services for the Patchogue Medford School District.

Adrienne Salamone, L.C.S.W., has a BA from SUNY at Oneonta and an MSW from Adelphi University.  She also has a post-graduate certificate in Family Therapy from Hunter College. She has recently retired from the Merrick School District where she had been a social worker for over 25 years. Ms. Salamone has also worked in medical and prior educational settings. She’s been a member of LISELF’s executive board for the past 6 years.  While in Merrick, Ms. Salamone promoted SEL programs, such as Lion’s Quest and Calm Classroom.  She also collaborated in writing and implementing an original mental health curriculum for 6th grade students.

Dorothy Ahl, M.S., Ed.S., is a New York State Certified School Psychologist.  She has worked as a school psychologist in Massapequa Schools since 1999. Before that she spent 15 years as a special education teacher in Deer Park and Massapequa. After taking the MBSR course, she developed a daily mindfulness practice, and has been incorporating mindfulness techniques into her counseling sessions with elementary school-aged children.  She is the co-chair of the Long Island Social Emotional Literacy Forum (LI SELF), and is a member of NASP, NYASP, and SCPA.  Dorothy is certified as a Mindful Educator through Mission Be, and as a Bully Prevention Specialist through NASP.  She is also a NYS certified Dignity Act Instructor and a NASP PREPaRE trainer.  She has presented workshops on Mindfulness Strategies for Elementary School Students for LI SELF, SCPA, and in her home district.  Most recently, she visited Hong Kong, where she conducted a 2-day workshop on using Mindfulness Strategies in the Elementary Schools, and then visited various Hong Kong Schools, conducting sample lessons with students, and meeting with school staff to discuss implementation strategies.

Ronald Smith, Ph.D., is a Psychologist and former Superintendent of Schools. He is a founding member of the SEL Forum.
